He is a therapist, who is hired to take over the responsibilities of Sister Peter Marie after she is fired.
Warden Glynn fires Sister Peter Marie from Oz after she decides to support the protestors of the death penalty. Auerback is hired to replace Sister Pete as the therapist of Oz. When he first arrives, Ryan O'Reily scoffs at him, telling him that they wanted Sister Pete back.
Later, he goes through the files in Sister Pete's office, trying to familiarize himself with the prisoners of Oz. Father Mukada and Tim McManus visit him in an attempt to get him to approve Miguel Alvarez leaving Oz to see his child. Auerback denies them, but McManus decides to forgo Auerback's permission and let Alvarez go anyway. After Sister Pete is rehired, Auerback is never seen or mentioned again.
