Eduardo Alvarez

Eduardo Alvarez is a Latino inmate featured in Oz. Portrayed by Jose R. Rosario.

Character Summary[]

He is a background inmate who works as a hospital orderly and is the son of fellow inmate Ricardo Alvarez and the father of fellow inmate Miguel Alvarez. When he first arrived in Oz, he had his tongue cut out by a Haitian inmate taking away his ability to speak. This caused the Haitian inmate to be murdered at the hands of Ricardo who then serves life imprisonment in solitary confinement.

Plot Summary[]

Season 1[]

When Father Ray Mukada, the prison chaplain is trying to help convince Miguel Alvarez to raise his newly born baby, he finds that Miguel's father Eduardo and grandfather Ricardo are both serving time in Oz and may be of influence to Miguel. Warden Glynn informs him that Ricardo is serving Life in Solitary and a conversation with Eduardo is impossible because he has no tongue. After being convinced by Mukada, Ricardo takes Eduardo to demand that Miguel raise his newborn child and do a better job at parenting than the two of them have done. Miguel goes through whole-heartedly but then the baby dies shortly afterwards due to medical complications. When Ricardo becomes sick with Alzheimer's disease, Eduardo and Miguel watch over Ricardo during his last days alive.

Season 2[]

Eduardo only appeared as an orderly in the background but Miguel came to him when Raoul "El Cid" Hernandez began serving time in Oz. Miguel then tells him he has no options to get back into El Norte unless he blinds a new CO Eugene Rivera whom El Cid despises. Eduardo signals to Miguel to do whatever he must as long as it is the only thing he can do. From here, Eduardo no longer appears but can be assumed to be working in the hospital ward throughout the duration of the show.
